The Lithuanian State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) has started paying personal income tax (GPM) refunds. More than 13,000 residents have already received over EUR 8 million in refunds. Transfers are made automatically to the bank account indicated in the tax declaration.

How Does the Refund Process Work?
If your declaration creates an overpayment, VMI transfers the refund automatically. No separate request for the refund itself is required. The key condition is a correct declaration with a valid bank account number.
Who Must File by 4 May 2026?
- People with individual activity (even with zero income)
- People who applied too high annual NPD
- People who sold assets before minimum holding periods
- People who rented out property to private individuals
- People who received larger gifts from non-family members
- People who received interest above EUR 500
- People in positions requiring mandatory asset/income declaration
- People who want to apply PIT deductions/reliefs
Which Expenses May Generate a Refund?
Residents may recover part of GPM for declared eligible expenses, including:
- Life insurance premiums
- 3rd pillar pension contributions
- Mortgage interest (for loans taken before 2009-01-01)
- Study or formal vocational education expenses
